CONFRONTING ABUSE AND NEGLECT AMONG THE ELDERLY: NO EASY TASK

As the aging population continues to grow, more attention is given to the mistreatment and abuse of older adults. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to mistreatment, neglect and abuse which often goes undetected.
WHAT IS ELDER ABUSE AND NEGLECT?
It is the act or lack of actions that may cause harm, risk or distress, within any relationship where trust is expected.
TYPES OF ABUSE: Abuse and neglect can be intentional or unintentional and may appear in various forms:
– Financial exploitation
– Emotional or psychological
– Physical
– Sexual
SIGNS OF ABUSE AND NEGLECT:
– Financial: Unpaid bills, suspicious charges on credit cards, unauthorized withdrawals from the older adult’s bank account, sudden changes in an individual’s will, disparity between assets and living condition.
– Physical: Pressure ulcers, bruises, lacerations or other injuries. Dehydration or malnutrition; appears sedated at times. Poor hygiene, lack of personal care and hygiene.
– Emotional and Psychological: Emotionally fragile, tearful, crying consistently, agitated, anxious, withdrawn; lack of eye contact; reluctant to discuss home life. Fabricates excuses or stories to rationalize consistent appearance of symptoms of abuse and neglect.
